Buff-Bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia yucatensis)...The Buff-bellied hummingbirds are medium sized - the mature adults are 3-3/4 inches in length. Adult male and female Buff-bellied hummingbirds are both metallic olive green above, and buffy in the lower breast. Their tails and primary wings are rufous in color, and slightly forked. Their underwings are white. The bill of the male is straight, very slender, and red in coloration with a darker tip. His throat is a metallic golden green. The female has a dark upper bill, and is less colorful than the male. The Buff-bellied hummingbird's breeding habitat is forests and thickets, and ranges from the lower Rio Grande River Valley in southernmost Texas of the United States, through the Yucatán Peninsula of eastern Mexico, and ending in northern Belize and northwestern Guatemala in Central America. They prefer pine-oak forests, semi-arid scrub, and thickets along watercourses.
Both males and females of any age aggressively defend feeding locations within his or her territory. The Buff-bellied hummingbirds in the US are partially migratory. They winter in small numbers along the Gulf Coast of the United States... from Texas to the Florida panhandle.
